Clogs in Newer Surprise Homes
Most Surprise homes were built in the last twenty-five years with ABS plastic drain lines. ABS is smooth and durable, so when drains clog here, it is usually about what goes into them and how the plumbing was laid out.
A few patterns we see again and again in Surprise:
- Long drain runs with low-flow toilets. Water-saving toilets are great for the bill but use less water to push waste down a long line. Add thick paper and it stops short.
- Laundry standpipes. Lint and fabric fibers build up where the washer drains, and a hard-draining washer can overflow the standpipe.
- Kitchen lines. Grease and food scraps collect in the horizontal pipe behind the sink, especially where it turns.
- Wipes. Even “flushable” wipes do not break down the way toilet paper does.

Drain Tips for Sun City Grand and Seasonal Homes
If you spend part of the year away from your Surprise home, the water in your drain traps can evaporate in the summer heat. When that happens, sewer gas can come up through tubs, showers and floor drains, which is why some returning owners notice a sewer smell.
Running water in every fixture for a few seconds when you get back refills the traps. If the smell does not go away, or you have a drain that was already slow before you left, call us. We handle drain cleaning throughout Surprise, including Sun City Grand.
Our main Peoria drain cleaning page explains hydro jetting and how we choose the right method.

Main Line Backups in Surprise Neighborhoods
When more than one drain backs up at a time in a Surprise home, the clog is in the main sewer line. In newer neighborhoods like Marley Park and Surprise Farms, the usual causes are wipes, grease that made it past the kitchen line, or a sag in the pipe where the soil settled after construction.
We clear the main from the exterior cleanout, which is usually on the side of the house facing the street. In a lot of Surprise homes, that cleanout is buried under decorative rock or landscaping fabric. We find it, clear the line, and make sure the cap goes back on tight.
If the same main line keeps clogging at the same distance from the cleanout, that tells us there is a low spot or a damaged joint. Our Surprise sewer line page explains what repairing that involves.
One more Surprise-specific tip: if your home has a water softener, its drain line usually runs to the laundry standpipe or a nearby drain. If that drain is partly clogged, the softener’s regeneration cycle can overflow it at night, which looks like a mystery puddle in the morning.
Reviews From Homeowners Near Surprise
Alex arrived at our house on short notice. He did a great job and explained the cause (which I always appreciate) of the clogs, so I can hopefully prevent in future. Prompt and courteous. I recommend him and his brother.

Alex was upfront about the cost and timeframe. Great communication on his end which is important cause I’m busy and I’m sure he is too. He came when he said he would. He was ultra courteous, explained the details of the job and did the work quickly. I will use him again for future plumbing needs.

Surprise Drain Cleaning Questions
Why does my toilet keep clogging in my newer Surprise home?
Often it is the combination of a low-flow toilet, a long drain run and thick toilet paper. Occasionally, something is stuck in the toilet’s trap. We can tell which it is.
My washer overflows the standpipe. Is that a clog?
Usually, yes. Lint builds up in the standpipe and the line below. Cleaning the line typically fixes it.
What causes a sewer smell after I get back from summer?
Dry drain traps. Run water in every sink, tub, shower and floor drain to refill them. If the smell stays, there may be a venting or drain issue.
Do you clear main lines in Surprise?
Yes, from the exterior cleanout. If the main line has a deeper problem, see our Surprise sewer line page.
