How a Water Softener Works
A water softener uses a tank of small resin beads to trade the calcium and magnesium in your water for sodium or potassium. Hard water flows in, the minerals stick to the resin, and softened water flows out to the rest of the house.
Every so often, the resin fills up with minerals and needs to be recharged. That is called regeneration. The softener pulls salty water (brine) from the salt tank, flushes it through the resin to knock the minerals loose, and sends the waste to the drain. Then it is ready to soften again.
Modern softeners regenerate based on how much water you actually use, which saves salt and water compared with older timer-based models. When we set up a softener in your Glendale home, we program it for your household size and water hardness so it regenerates only when it needs to.
