Old Laterals, Predictable Problems

Tolleson’s older homes typically have sewer laterals made of clay or cast iron. Both materials served well for decades, but both have weak points.

Clay pipe comes in short sections with a joint every few feet. Roots grow into those joints, and ground movement can crack or offset them.

Cast iron corrodes along the bottom, where waste sits. Over time, it thins, cracks and can collapse.

When an older Tolleson sewer line starts backing up repeatedly, one of those problems is usually behind it.

Replacing Old Sewer Pipe With PVC

When we replace a section or a full lateral in Tolleson, we use PVC pipe. PVC does not rust, it has glued joints that roots cannot penetrate, and it holds up well in the ground.

A section repair replaces only the damaged part of the line. Full replacement swaps the entire lateral from the house to the connection at the street. We recommend full replacement when there are problems in multiple places, since fixing them one at a time costs more in the long run.

  • Slow drains throughout the house
  • Soggy or sunken spots over the line

Clay Pipe: What Actually Goes Wrong

Clay sewer pipe was the standard for decades, and a lot of it is still working in older Tolleson homes. It does not rust, and the pipe itself is strong. The weak points are the joints.

Older clay pipe was joined with mortar or simple bell-and-spigot connections that were never fully watertight. Over the years:

  • Roots grow into the joints looking for water
  • Ground movement shifts sections out of line, creating offsets that catch waste
  • Joints crack and let soil and water in
  • Sections can break under heavy loads, like vehicles parked over the line

When clay pipe starts failing, it usually fails at more than one joint. That is why full lateral replacement is often the better value for older Tolleson homes than repairing joints one at a time.
